Naughty Dog is no stranger to making first class games. From their early days on the PlayStation and Crash Bandicoot, to the epic Uncharted trilogy that has graced PlayStation 3, Naughty Dog has been making classic games throughout the history of the console. With The Last of Us, Naughty Dog is showing their take on a post-apocalyptic world where society has crumbled and those that are remaining struggle to etch out an existence.
In the first glimpses of The Last of Us, Naughty Dog teased gamers with thrilling trailers that contained zero gameplay. Those trailers can be found here and here. While these trailers were captivating and enough to draw us in, flydrs needed to see gameplay to become fully engrossed in this new game, and over E3 Naughty Dog delivered with a stunning trailer filled with information and insight into The Last of Us. In case you missed the gameplay trailer, check it out below.
One of the most striking aspects of the game are the visuals, which is not surprising given Naughty Dog’s history with games like Uncharted. The run-down and dilapidated buildings, in stark contrast to the overgrown foliage that is quickly retaking the city, presents a uniquely beautiful and wild world. Making their way through what was once an opulent hotel, Joel and Ellie soon realize they’re not alone. However, it is not the infected that are a threat this time, but a makeshift gang of people are that equally dangerous. One of the enemies, upon hearing a gunshot exclaims “He’s got a gun,” in more choice words of course. Later, when Joel fires his last shot, another enemy realizes that he is out of ammo and proceeds to advance. This sophisticated AI, along with an item crafting system, should add quite a bit of strategy to the game.
Even the item inventory menu is noteworthy, with Joel removing his backpack to reveal the menu. These subtle details go a long way towards emphasizing the level of desperateness in The Last of Us, the lack of resources, and highlight the on-the-go situation most of those are are left find themselves in. Although this trailer didn’t show any of the infected that were shown in the reveal trailer, it certainly raised the level of excitement here at flydrs. Stay tuned for more information on The Last of Us as it becomes available.
